While designing FurTech Trousers we experimented with all sorts of ways of sealing the ankle against snow and rain, maintaining maximum breathability and keeping things light. My preferred choice is this superlight ankle gaiters from Trek Mates.
I didn't really expect that ankle gaiters beneath FurTech Trousers would keep deep snow out, but they do. There is enough of an overlap for it to work.
Ankle gaiters are preferable when it's warm enough for shorts. They also facilitate easier venting of the lower leg with the FurTech Trouser zips (other venting gaiters can be heavy and expensive).
These ankle gaiters only weight 60g each, but haven't shown any serious signs of wear yet.
The fabric is lightweight and rip stop and the waterproof breathable coating stiffens it slightly, which helps reduce snagging. When worn beneath FurTech Trousers there's been minimal condensation, probably because the fabric is kept warm enough to breathe.
They have a simple front opening making them easy to put on and it's easy to adjust boot laces.
The underfoot strap is rubberised and super tough. Please take care in securing it to prevent snags and trips.
