14 years ago I started wearing garments using FurTech type fabrics. Back then I was surprised and amazed at the comfort and performance compared to other top of the range waterproofs. But how could it be improved? This was the key question for developing the FurTech jackets.
Fur Technology provides lightweight and thin insulation, windproofing and waterproofing. They actively expel condensation to keep you drier than a hardshell in most storm conditions yet are more breathable than membrane soft shells.
Fur Technology eliminates the need for membranes, multi layer laminates and taped seams, saving weight over conventional layering systems and improving breathability and temperature flexability.
FurTech jackets are best worn over a base layer suitable for the season.
Temperature Adaptability is extended to year round use by Dry Vents. These large vents are positioned under the arm and allow air to circulate through the jacket to your base layer, bypassing the integral insulation for rapid cooling. The Dry Vents can be used when walking in heavy, vertical rain as the stiffness of the zip forms a cowl around the vent.
The Dry Vents are large enough for you to easily remove your arm from the sleeve for rapid cooling in dry conditions. This is especially useful in reducing the faff factor when wearing a sack, body coils and harness.
Some manufacturers decry the need for vents, claiming that their fabric is breathable enough. This is rubbish: If sweat is standing on your bare brow the air its self isn't breathable enough and you need to vent, remove layers or slow down! (In fact our fabrics are more breathable than any membrane fabric we know of!)
The amazing temperature adaptability of FurTech garments dramatically reduces the Faff Factor associated with stopping to change layers - a key element in our light and fast philosophy.
The Hand Protector Cuffs are cut long so that you can tuck your hands inside and easly pop them out again- great for doing stuff that requires dexterity.
The velcro closure on the Hand Protector Cuffs can be fastened around the thumb to hold the sleeve down over the hand, adding extra protection to thin gloves. (This feature may not be effective if you have large hands.)
The Hand Protector Cuff is large enough to fit over a big mitt to form a good seal and can be folded up for warmer conditions.
The Sight'n'Sound Hood fits over a helmet or cinches down with a single drawcord to move with your head.
The Sight'n'Sound Hood's transparent peak offers excellent protection and allows you to look up or over your shoulder, which is useful while scrambling (or just crossing the road). The transparent peak also allows you to look directly into wind driven hail, snow or rain and doesn't interfere with the beam of a small LED head torch.
The Sight'n'Sound Hood also allows good clarity of hearing unlike many membrane products which may rustle. This is useful for belay shouts and normal conversation while fell walking. It extends the comfort of the hood enormously.
The hood rolls to form a tall collar with an elastic drawcord offering good protection for the neck and chin. It can be cinched beneath the chin to prevent water blasting inside, should you be climbing through a waterfall!
Our Snow Seal Hem (patent pending) easily secures between your legs to prevent the jacket from rising up. The hem drawcord is easily adjustable and comfortable to use. It also seals out powder snow (even during off-piste head plants) and makes the jacket and trousers as effective as a one piece suit. Should you be wearing soggy over tousers it will support them without the need for braces. It also ensures the jacket fits closely so that the fabric doesn't obscure your harness or feet while climbing.
The elastic also allows the jacket to be secured into a roll so that the sleeves can be tied around your waist... useful for short walks in warmer conditions or ditching the sack and zipping to the top of an additional summit.
To give you some idea of their size, all 4 pockets on the Claw are big enough for a laminated OS Map.
The two Chest Pockets are a Napoleon style so that they are easily accessible from beneath an OverShell or duvet jacket.
The Hand Pockets can be acessed from the top or bottom depending on the fit of your sack's waist belt or hip belt. They can be used with a harness for hand warming.
The cut allows a full range of movement and the non-laminated fabrics flow freely over base layers.
I've used the Claw Jacket climbing, scrambling, skiing and walking. I've slept in it on bivis. I've used it in mid-winter and in summer rain and its temperature adaptability is extraordinary, especially when used with our FurTech Trousers.
