To say the least it's anti-social to be wearing normal socks in an alpine hut when they haven't been off your feet for 10 days. That was my initial reason for getting the AirForce1 - they don't smell nearly as bad as much as other socks.
I tried these medium thickness socks inside B2 boots in Scotland, in February, and they are surprisingly comfortable and warm enough, though I'm sure they weren't designed for cold conditions. I've also worn them running and mountain biking... no problems and not too hot.
The sole, heel and toe areas include silver fibers that are highly antimicrobial. This is what helps to stop them smelling, but can also help prevent blisters from becoming infected and may even help prevent athletes foot.
