The ShellTA is useful for reinforcing any type of clothing system in wet weather, but I've used mine mostly for stormy lunch stops when its side by side seating arrangement (for 2) is useful for sitting on the sides of hills or behind stone walls. It has an amazing ability to help dry wet FurTech layers while I'm eating lunch, because of its hydrophilic waterproof breathable fabric and the exra warmth inside.
I've also used it occasionally as a tarp, bivi bag and changing room for adding extra insulation in a storm. Unlike other shelters, it helps to remove rain water from between layers as you change inside!!
In poncho mode the ShellTA promises a well ventilated option in warm rain, worn over shorts and T-shirt.
With the side zips fastened the ShellTA adds extra protection in extremely wet weather.
It also adds a well ventilated layer over any hard or softshell system... think of it as the outer layer of bricks in a cavity wall building. This can improve breathability and protection.
When used to reinforce wind and water resistant softshell clothing, over trousers will not be needed in many situations. Especially when gaiters are used to protect the lower leg.
Wear the ShellTA beneath your sack in very windy conditions to prevent it flapping or acting as a sail. This is especially important on rocky or precipitous ground. Please take care.
How does it work? Imagine a poncho with zips on the sides and made from hydrphilic waterproof beathable fabric. It can be worn over a sack (or underneath in windy weather) and is broad enough to seat two people, side by side for stormy lunch stops or emergency bivis. Use the zips as vents/windows. Open it out to form a tarp and rejoin the zips, one half to the other, to form a long tube bivi bag - the bottom end and hood can be sealed with cord or elastic.
In tarp mode the centre of the fabric can be supported by tying cord around the hood and supporting it from an external pole, improving tension without infringing on living space.
In bivibag mode the ShellTA shouldn't be completely sealed as it is not made from a vapour exchange fabric. It is suitable to protect from showers and drips but expect condensation in proper wet weather.
